Walker County is almost 800 square miles and is served by several divisions within the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Our most visible division is our Patrol Division. Made up of a mix of veteran and young deputies alike, our Patrol Division is led by Captain Josh Key and is responsible for answering calls for service, serving papers, evictions, supporting operations of other divisions, and several other duties.
Next is our Investigations Division, which is led by Captain Darrell Mote and is charged with working cases from theft and identity fraud all the way up to burglary, child abuse, and murder. This division is comprised of a fantastic group of seasoned investigators who have maintained a stellar closure rate on all assigned cases. It also includes two cold case investigators and an animal abuse investigator, three things that didn’t exist until Sheriff Smith took office and prioritized them.
Our Narcotics Division is led by Captain Ralph Williams and has been responsible for more drug arrests and search warrants in the last four years than ever before in Walker County. The deputies of the Narcotics Division receive specialized training and spend countless hours fighting the drug trade that has had a grip on Walker County for decades. They also work hand in hand with our Patrol and Investigations Divisions to build the strongest cases possible so we not only get drug manufacturers and dealers off the streets, but keep them behind bars.
Lastly, our Communications & Clerical Divisions are the heartbeat of the Sheriff’s Office. Led by Director of Operations Nick Key, the Communications Division takes all emergency calls that come into the department and dispatches deputies to scenes as fast as possible and with the best information they can give them. Our Communications Officers also handle all communications from all divisions in the field and keep detailed logs on what deputies and investigators do throughout their work day. The Clerical Division is responsible for issuing and maintaining pistol permits, maintaining warrants, civil papers, records management, sex offender registry, and call screening.
Walker County is a big place that requires constant attention. These divisions exist to serve the people of this county and give it’s citizens the attention they deserve. It’s a big job, but it’s one we don’t take lightly and we are dedicated to going above and beyond the call of duty to serve and protect the people and families of Walker County.
