Mentone, AL – Congressman Robert Aderholt has announced the approval of a $295,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to replace a crucial water main in Mentone, Alabama. The Water Works Board of the City of Fort Payne will use these funds to upgrade 2,300 linear feet of an 80-year-old 4-inch water main with a new 10-inch main. This improvement aims to enhance water service for 25 businesses and 368 households.
"This grant represents an important investment in Mentone’s infrastructure and future growth," stated Congressman Aderholt. He emphasized the need to modernize and expand capacity to meet community needs, ensuring safe and reliable water service while supporting the town's tourism-driven economy.
The Water Works Board of Fort Payne is responsible for Mentone's water infrastructure. The new larger main will be installed under Alabama Highway 117 at Lookout Mountain's top, connecting to existing storage facilities. This upgrade addresses current limitations that cause pressure drops and unsafe conditions during peak tourist seasons.
Mentone is known for its scenic location on Lookout Mountain and attracts visitors year-round, contributing significantly to the local economy through various activities. However, increased visitor numbers strain the existing water system. This project supports both tourism growth and local needs.
In addition to ARC funding, local sources will match $295,000, making the total project investment $590,000. The Appalachian Regional Commission is a regional economic development agency funded by Congress to support projects benefiting Appalachian communities.
Construction on this project is expected to start soon.
