Congressman Robert Aderholt has issued a response following the release of an Inspector General report regarding the selection of U.S. Space Command’s headquarters. Aderholt, representing Alabama's 4th district, expressed concerns about the findings, which he claims demonstrate political influence in relocating the command center to Colorado Springs.
"The findings in the Inspector General’s report confirm what many of us in Alabama have long suspected — that the Biden Administration's decision to move U.S. Space Command to Colorado Springs was driven by politics, not merit," the congressman stated.
According to Aderholt, the investigation highlights the potential deviation from the original selection process, which had ranked Huntsville, Alabama as the preferred location based on various factors. He emphasized that "Huntsville earned its ranking fair and square, based on strategic value, existing infrastructure, and quality of life in North Alabama." Aderholt claims that ignoring these factors for political reasons could jeopardize public trust and military readiness.
Despite these concerns, Aderholt remains hopeful that "with new leadership at the Department of the Air Force," decisions can be reassessed. He expressed optimism that the new Secretary of the Air Force would reevaluate the situation "apolitically" and rectify what he deems a misguided decision.
Aderholt concluded his statement affirming his ongoing commitment to collaborating with colleagues to ensure that decisions affecting national security are "made on the merits, not political convenience."
