Congressman Robert Aderholt of Alabama has expressed support for the Trump administration’s decision to rescind guidance from the Biden era related to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). The previous guidance required emergency room doctors to perform abortions, which Aderholt argues undermined state pro-life laws.
Aderholt stated, “I strongly commend President Trump and his administration for restoring clarity and integrity to federal law by rescinding the Biden administration’s EMTALA guidance. Congress never intended EMTALA to be a backdoor mandate for abortion. It was designed to ensure that patients receive emergency medical care, regardless of their ability to pay, not to override pro-life state laws.”
He criticized the prior guidance as legally flawed and misleading, suggesting it created confusion about women’s access to emergency care in states with pro-life laws. He emphasized that all states allow treatment for emergencies such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy when a mother’s life is at risk.
Aderholt expressed gratitude towards the administration for reaffirming the protection offered by pro-life laws, stating, “This is a win for life, a win for truth, and a win for the many doctors who provide life-saving care with compassion and integrity.”
As Chair of the House Values Action Team, Aderholt has been an advocate for pro-life legislation and supports protecting both unborn children and medical professionals who opt out of performing abortions due to moral or religious beliefs.
