It has been one year since President Donald J. Trump began his second term as President of the United States. U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Cullman), who represents Alabama’s 4th district in Congress, reflected on the administration’s actions and their impact over the past twelve months.

Aderholt described attending the inauguration in the Capitol Rotunda and said that during this period, “the Trump administration has delivered real results that Americans can see in their daily lives by restoring law and order at our border, reining in a runaway federal government, and reaffirming a simple but essential principle: this nation belongs to its citizens, and its leaders are accountable to them.”

He pointed to changes at the southern border as a clear example of leadership, contrasting President Trump’s approach with that of the previous administration. “For years, Americans were told by the Biden administration that nothing could be done without Congress passing a new law. That excuse has now been fully exposed. We did not need new laws; we needed a President willing to act,” Aderholt stated.

Aderholt recounted his visit to the border in January 2024, where he observed what he called a “system in collapse.” He said large stretches of the border were open and border patrol agents overwhelmed. He continued: “The message being sent to the world was unmistakable: come now, and you will likely get in.”

He credited President Trump for reversing that message: “Under President Trump’s leadership, illegal crossings have plummeted in many sectors. The border is no longer treated as a suggestion, but as a sovereign boundary.” Aderholt contrasted this with what he described as prior inaction: “The Biden administration chose to look the other way and then blamed Congress. President Trump chose to enforce the law. The result has been immediate, measurable, and historic.”

According to Aderholt, efforts have also focused on removing criminal illegal aliens from communities nationwide through increased enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He cited an operation in Alabama involving ICE and local authorities that resulted in detaining 14 individuals with prior criminal offenses.

“Restoring the rule of law at the border and within our communities is essential to ensuring families can once again feel safe in their neighborhoods,” Aderholt said.

On fiscal policy, Aderholt highlighted cooperation between congressional Republicans and President Trump through legislation such as what he called “the One Big Beautiful Bill.” He said it included provisions like a strong child tax credit and support for rural hospitals.

America’s foreign policy was also discussed by Aderholt. He praised actions taken against Iran’s nuclear facilities and support for allies abroad: “President Trump acted decisively against its nuclear facilities, making clear that the United States will not tolerate nuclear brinkmanship.” He also mentioned efforts related to Venezuela’s government.

Aderholt noted diplomatic efforts led by President Trump contributed toward ending conflict in Gaza while pursuing negotiated solutions elsewhere: “While the Russia–Ukraine war remains unresolved, he continues pressing all sides toward a negotiated solution that ends bloodshed without drawing the United States into another open-ended foreign entanglement.”

Regarding military infrastructure decisions affecting Alabama, Aderholt referenced United States Space Command: “Redstone Arsenal was selected as the permanent home of Space Command based on merit…President Biden reversed that decision for purely political reasons. President Trump restored Space Command to where it rightfully belongs.”

Aderholt concluded his statement by emphasizing changes under current leadership: “We have moved from excuses to action…This anniversary is more than a milestone. It is proof that leadership matters…President Trump’s first year back in office has shown what is possible when we put America first, and we are just getting started.”

Robert Aderholt has represented Alabama’s 4th district since 1997 after replacing Tom Bevill; before serving in Congress he was part of Alabama’s House of Representatives. Born in Haleyville in 1965, he continues to reside there today.
