Congressman Robert Aderholt announced his support for the SAVE America Act after it passed in the House of Representatives. The legislation requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections and aims to strengthen election integrity standards.
Aderholt stated, “I am proud to have voted ‘Yes’ on the SAVE America Act to ensure that American elections are fair and free. We need to restore confidence in our voters and integrity in our elections, because it’s common-sense that American elections should be decided by American voters, and American voters only.”
The Pew Research Center has reported that a large majority of Americans—83%—support requiring all voters to show government-issued photo identification.
According to Aderholt, Americans already use photo identification for various activities such as checking into hotels, purchasing alcohol or tobacco, opening bank accounts, boarding flights, donating blood, or buying certain medicines. He said the act would add voting in federal elections to this list.
Aderholt has represented Alabama’s 4th district in Congress since 1997 after succeeding Tom Bevill. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives. Born in Haleyville, Alabama in 1965, Aderholt is currently 57 years old and continues to reside there. He graduated from Birmingham–Southern College with a BA in 1987 and earned a JD from Samford University in 1990.
