U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the population of older adults nationwide is rising as the younger population shrinks. The number of Americans aged 65 and older climbed 13% from 2020 to 2024, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the course of a century, the country’s older adult population has grown significantly, jumping from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study found that almost half of Americans in this demographic—approximately 28 million people—may need long-term services and support, with projections that more than one-third could ultimately require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, who serves as executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
