Congressman Robert Aderholt, who represents Alabama’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, voiced concern about the potential lapse of food assistance benefits due to a government funding deadlock in Washington. He has held his seat since 1997 after succeeding Tom Bevill and previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives.
Aderholt stated, “Food assistance benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will lapse on November 1 simply because Washington can’t keep the government open. This failure is completely avoidable. Working families should never be used as leverage in partisan battles. If Democrats wish to open discussions about Affordable Care Act subsidies, I say let’s do that — but let’s keep the government running while we talk. Let’s not shut down vital services and leave millions of Americans wondering how they’ll put food on the table.”
He stressed that Congress must ensure essential services like SNAP continue without disruption, regardless of political disagreements.
Aderholt also pointed out that closing the government over unrelated issues negatively affects federal workers, contractors, and millions of families dependent on important programs and paychecks from federal service.
Aderholt was born in Haleyville, Alabama in 1965 and continues to reside there at age 57. He graduated from Birmingham–Southern College with a BA in 1987 and earned his JD from Samford University in 1990.
