Congressman Robert Aderholt chaired a hearing in Washington focused on the impact of community colleges in workforce preparation and economic development. The session featured testimony from Shawn Morgan, vice president of workforce and strategy initiatives at Bevill State Community College in Jasper, and Dr. Patricia Sims, president of J.F. Drake State Community & Technical College in Huntsville.

Morgan described how Bevill State collaborates with local industries to provide students with practical training that matches current job market demands.

“It was especially meaningful to have Mr. Morgan share how Bevill State is helping students in our region gain the skills they need for good-paying jobs,” said Aderholt. “Community colleges like Bevill State play a key role in strengthening workforce pipelines in rural communities.”

Dr. Sims spoke about similar workforce training programs and employer partnerships at Drake State.

“Dr. Sims is doing outstanding work just outside our district in Huntsville, helping students gain the technical skills needed to succeed in today’s economy,” Aderholt said.

Aderholt highlighted during the hearing that enrollment at community colleges is increasing as more Americans look for quicker and less expensive routes into the job market.

Video recordings of the testimony from both Morgan and Dr. Sims are available on YouTube for those interested in their full remarks before the subcommittee.

Robert Aderholt has represented Alabama’s 4th Congressional District since 1997, succeeding Tom Bevill after serving previously in the Alabama House of Representatives. He was born in Haleyville, Alabama, where he currently resides, and earned his undergraduate degree from Birmingham–Southern College followed by a law degree from Samford University.
