BIRMINGHAM, AL – On Wednesday, June 28, Boutwell Auditorium will celebrate the community and its members with a new summer series known as “Wind Down Wednesday.” This free event, which will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will also be held on July 19 and Aug. 30.

The June 28 event will honor strong fathers, father figures and male mentoring groups for the support, commitment and impact they’ve made and are making in the Magic City.

“We want to invite everyone to come to the Boutwell to unwind, get empowered and be inspired by some of the outstanding work that men are doing in Birmingham. This will be an evening filled with connections and meaningful conversations,” said Boutwell Director Alicia Johnson-Williams. “Attendees will also have the chance to explore initiatives that are strengthening  our city.”

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.’s Omega Lamp Lighters will present its Father of the Year Award. Dancers with the Files Art Project will perform, and the Black Cherry Tree Project will have art on display. Several community partners, including Red Mountain Theatre, will also be present to share information about their programs.

Johnson-Williams said each month’s gathering will have a theme. The July 19 event will be known as Neo Soul Lounge, highlighting local spoken word artists. The Aug. 30 event will honor women and encourage attendees to wear white as part of the evening’s theme of “Boutwell En Blanc.”

“Birmingham has an incredible spirit, and that’s truly because of the people who live, work, shop and volunteer here,” Johnson-Williams said. “Wind Down Wednesday is our way of showcasing some of the talent and love people put into our city.”
